Our Story

Our Purpose

Capital Zone Basketball is a charitable trust, established in 2016, to support local Basketball across the Greater Wellington Region and in particular to assist in utilising basketball as a medium and pathway for youth development.

To ensure everybody, from all walks of life, has the chance to access and experience the enjoyment of movement with a basketball in hand any where, anytime at any location. Capital Zone Basketball Trust exists to enable access for participation and create pathways to achieve potential while contributing to community values and allowing our tamariki and rangatahi a chance to enjoy a life-long love for movement through basketball.

Our Achievements

Key Achievements

Winners of the Basketball NZ Community Innovation Award
In 2022 was the beginning of an innovative basketball offering called the Matariki Basketball Festival. This was the first time athletes off all mobility levels, ages and gender played in a festival-like structure in celebration and appreciation of everyone who plays our game. The overall success was designing and implementing our festival in partnership with NZ Special Olympics, Halberg NZ, Wheelchair Basketball NZ, Local Community groups and commercial sponsors who all pitched in to breath life into a new experience of basketball. Aligning the values to that of the nine stars of Matariki gave this kaupapa a higher purpose than the game itself. We did not celebrate the winners of the tournament instead we acknowledged teams who displayed the values of our Matariki Basketball Festival.

Runners up of the Wellington Airport Regional Community Award
Community participation, access and affordability are paramount to what drives our team to continue to break down barriers of access to basketball. This award acknowledged the range of offerings we provide to all communities in our Capital Zone. It was humbling to receive this award alongside other volunteers in the Sport & Leisure sector.
