Referee Information

Basketball is a tremendous sport that can be officiated for a lifetime. Capital Basketball, along with our Association members and partners, are here to get you involved in a fantastic sport as a referee. We offer opportunities for referee development, whether you are starting out new or aspiring to greater levels.

The Capital Referee programme aligns with the BBNZ National Referee Programme Pathway and our aim is to ensure everybody across the Capital Region has access to quality referee education and support while learning.

This includes:

>  Regular courses delivered around the region at the Community Referee Level,
>  Ongoing support for schools and associations,
>  Access to learning resources, referee get-togethers,
>  Facilitating opportunities for referees aspiring to Representative Levels and above.

By becoming a referee, you are joining a large family that works together and supports each other. There are various ways to get involved as a referee so let us know if we can point you towards refereeing opportunities near you. Capital Basketball runs BBNZ accredited referee courses and can link you to appropriate leagues and mentor support while you practice your skills and build your confidence. We recommend that all new referees seek the appropriate course to learn to officiate correctly. Check under Capital Basketball Referee Education to check upcoming courses around the region. If your school, association or club would like something delivered in-house, please email training@capitalbasketball.org to find out how we can help.

The Capital Basketball Referee Programme includes courses and mentor support at the Kiwi Hoops Referee and Community Referee levels of the national pathway. The Kiwi Hoops level is applicable to refereeing ages 5-13 years old. The Community level referee is applicable to refereeing secondary school and community adult leagues.

To find out about upcoming Community Referee Courses or to arrange a Kiwi Hoops Referee Course for your mini-ball referees, please email training@capitalbasketball.org

Please note that referee education at the Representative Referee level and above are coordinated and delivered by BBNZ.

Contact us to find opportunities to referee. It doesn’t matter what level referee you are, we will do our best to find you a referee mentor and a suitable league to practice your craft.
