Basketball continues to grow and coaches are in hot demand! Capital Basketball has a number of development options for both new and seasoned coaches. This includes the BBNZ accredited coaching programme and other informal learning opportunities.

BBNZ Kiwi Hoops Coach - Practical Workshops

Kiwi Hoops is the Basketball New Zealand junior basketball program. The Kiwi Hoops Coach Workshop provides participants an understanding of best practice coaching for 5-12 year olds.

The Kiwi Hoops Coach Workshop is a user-friendly introduction to basic coaching with a focus on helping to provide fun participation experiences for tamariki.

The aim of this workshop is to provide coaches with the foundation skills needed to deliver age and stage-appropriate coaching sessions. The focus is on the development of basic basketball skills, movement development, and enjoyment coaching 5-12 year olds.

Opportunities to connect informally with other coaches in the Capital Zone. These drop-in sessions are not clinics, courses or workshops, just simply a platform where coaches can connect, share knowledge and experiences with one another.

Online Coaching Modules

Complete your coaching credentials online through Basketball New Zealand’s Learning Management System via SportTutor. This allows coaches to complete the theory component of specific courses online.

Modules Available: 1. Good Sports Foundation, 2. Coaching Safety Net, 3. Thriving Under Fire

To get started all you need to do is: Register online here to access Basketball New Zealand’s SportTutor portal. Under the Search Learning drop-down select Basketball New Zealand. All online courses are free to complete.


BBNZ Community Coach - Level 1 Accreditation

This is for coaches who coach in secondary school, association reps, and community adult leagues. The course aims to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of the role of a coach, player skill requirements and team requirements. This accreditation is based on the FIBA WABC Level 1 curriculum and is the new minimum requirement for coaches wanting to coach at BBNZ tournaments. It requires completing 3 online modules, attending the course and completing a practical assessment.
