The Capital Swish traveled to Christchurch to tip off their 2019 campaign in the first WBC Division 2 tournament 8-10 May at Cowles Stadium.
The team played three matches over two days starting with a closely fought contest against Harbour Zephyr on the Friday evening going down 64-71. In their first game together the Swish got off to a solid start and led the game by 1 point at the end of the first quarter and at half time. It was in the third quarter where Harbour went on a run and shot out to a 9 point lead. The Swish finished strongly in the fourth winning the quarter but despite a proud effort, it wasn’t enough to get the W.
A determined team returned to the courts on Saturday morning for their second match up against Northland Phoenix. The Swish bounced back from the night before and proved to be too good winning the match 71 – 20.
The final match of their tournament was against Rotorua Lady Geysers and it’s fair to say the Swish were keen to finish their trip off on a positive note. In a competitive match, Rotorua pushed our girls hard for 3 quarters and were only down by 4 at the end of the third. The fourth was a different story and the Swish jumped into another gear going on a big run closing out the game with authority winning 94-71.
Congrats to the team on a positive start to the season. Every player had their moment and the full roster contributed but there were some notable performances including classy team captain Letava Whippy averaging a double double with 29.3 points (1st in league), 11 rebounds (3rd in league) and 4.3 steals (1st in league). Arielle Parai was a force also averaging a double double with 15 points (5th), 11.3 rebounds (1st) and 2.7 steals (4th).
The Swish go back to work with Coach Deslea Wrathall and target their next tournament starting 15 June where they play 3 games in Wellington against South Canterbury Stealers, McAlpines M10 MEGA North Canterbury Spirit and Wellington Basketball Association.
